Charges have been dropped against a city police officer accused in a hit-and-run accident that resulted in more than $1,000 in property damage.

William Cassady, 44, a GPD crime scene technician, was accused of damaging a woman's car after he side-swiped it with his trailer on Feb. 9 near Four Oaks.

Johnston County Assistant District Attorney Aleta Ballard said she dismissed the charges because the incident was being handled by Cassady's insurance company.

The charge stemmed from a citation Cassady received in February.

According to reports, Cassady was traveling in a 2004 Ford pickup truck with a trailer attached to the rear when he allegedly sideswiped a 1997 Buick driven by Arieal Lee of Selma.

No one was hurt, but Cassady did not stop after the accident.

A witness followed him, took down the vehicle's description and license plate number and gave it to a trooper in Johnston County. The trooper used the information to track down the driver.

Cassady was served with a warrant for hit-and-run and improper lane change Feb. 20. The accident caused about $1,000 in damage to the Buick, Ford and trailer.

Cassady is an 11-year veteran of the department.
