Three finalists for 2007-08 Teacher of the Year for Wayne County Public Schools have been announced, with the countywide winner to be named on Tuesday night during a banquet at Goldsboro Country Club.
Individual candidates for the 32 schools in the district were announced in July. The field has been narrowed down to a Teacher of the Year at each educational level -- elementary, middle and high school.
Finalists include Sonja Emerson of Edgewood Com-munity Devel-opmental School; Robin Re, an eighth-grade math and science teacher at Greenwood Middle School; and Cathy Best, business teacher at Rosewood High School.
Each will receive Twiford Worldview Travel/Study Awards. The county's "Teacher of the Year" will receive a $5,000 travel/study stipend, a $1,500 check and the chance to compete against candidates from other school systems in the regional competition.
The other two finalists will receive a $4,000 travel/study stipend.
The monetary awards allow the teachers to travel outside the U.S. in order to expand their global perspective, which also benefits their students in terms of exciting lessons and classroom experiences.
