Shooting accident

An Eastern Wayne High School student was injured Thursday night when he was accidentally shot in the back after snake-hunting with friends.

Brandon Vinson, 19, of Poplar Ridge Road, had come back after snake-hunting with friends at about 11:41 p.m. Minutes later at about 11:53 p.m., he was shot as he reached into a vehicle to retrieve an item, officials said.

Vinson was shot with a .22-caliber rifle by his friend, William Stacey Pfau, 18, of Plantation Place, Wayne County Sheriff's Capt. Tom Effler said. No foul play is suspected.

"It appears to be an accidental shooting," Effler said. "No alcohol or drugs were involved that we know of."

The shooting happened at a home on Blue Bird Lane.

Vinson was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and later transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
