A Grantham area man is dead after being shot in the 200 block of Creech Street early Tuesday morning, Goldsboro police say.

The death marks the sixth fatal shooting within Goldsboro's city limits since April 22.

Jadie Demon Taylor, 22, of Twin Creeks Drive, Goldsboro, died after a witness Julius Reid, 23, of La Grange Road, drove Taylor in his own vehicle to Wayne Memorial Hospital, police said.

Taylor's car was pulled over on the way to the hospital, after 1:35 a.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Chad Calloway said.

"It drew an officer's attention and he stopped the vehicle," Calloway said.

Taylor was later pronounced dead at Wayne Memorial Hospital, according to the police report.

Calloway said he could not yet release a description of the suspect. The police report said the suspect is a black male.

"We're working as we speak," Calloway said. "We're in such preliminary stages, that anything I were to say ... might not be scientific or possibly correct."

Witness Cory Gist, 22, of Quail Drive, told investigators that Taylor and the suspect got into an argument that escalated into a fight, police said.

Gist reported he tried to intervene, after which the suspect shot the victim more than once and then fled on foot, police said.

Calloway said he had not yet checked if a 911 call about the shooting was made, because police stopped the vehicle on the way to the hospital.

The investigator said it appeared to him that calling an ambulance would not have prevented Taylor's death.

"I would not ever advocate not calling an ambulance," Calloway said. "But I think they were just doing the best they could at the time."

"I don't think it would have changed anything," he said.
