Mary Rhoe appointed to state Human Relations Commission

Mary Rhoe of Goldsboro has been appointed by Gov. Mike Easley to the state Human Relations Commission.
She will serve a three-year term on the commission, which is charged with providing services and programs aimed at improving relationships among all citizens of the state, seeking to ensure equal opportunities in employment, housing, public accommodations, recreation, education, justice and governmental services. The commission also enforces the North Carolina State Fair Housing Act and takes part in writing and implementing fair housing goals to meet federal standards. The commission helps local entities seek Community Development Block Grants and works with the state's 57 local autonomous commissions throughout.
Ms. Rhoe has been active in civic and political affairs in Wayne County for years as a member of the League of Women Voters, the Goldsboro Appearance Commission, the 3rd District Black Caucus, the state Legal Defense Fund, Legal Services for Eastern North Carolina and the North Carolina Alliance for the Mentally Ill, among others.
She has received the Martin Luther King Certificate of Merit and has been honored by both Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro and Caswell Center in Kinston as well as Legal Services for Eastern North Carolina.
A graduate of Dillard High School and Wayne Community College, she has worked at Neuse Correctional Center, Cherry Hospital, Caswell Center, the Goldsboro City Schools and WAGES Head Start.
