Highways, rezonings on commissioners' agenda

With the budget behind it and the traditional summer slowdown ahead, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners will hold its only meeting of the month Tuesday.
At the meeting, two public hearings will be held.
The first, at 9 a.m., will be on the N.C. Department of Transportation's proposed secondary road program for 2007-08.
Included in it will be paving and repair work on a half-mile stretch of Newsome Road and a 1.7 mile stretch of Spencer Road. Also scheduled is the construction of turn lanes on John Street at Arrington Bridge Road.
At 10 a.m., the board will then recess and reconvene as the Wayne County Board of Adjustment to consider two special use permit requests -- one from American Legion Post 11 for a temporary recreational vehicle campground around Legion Lake on U.S. 117 South, and one from Ricky Young for the expansion of Young's Auto Salvage on U.S. 117 South alternate.
Both requests have received positive recommendations from the county Planning Board, provided the American Legion establishes a list of rules and Young properly shields his property.
Once coming back into session as the board of commissioners, a second public hearing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on the county's application for funding from NCDOT's proposed Rural Operating Assistance Program.
If approved, the application, which includes funding for elderly and disabled transportation assistance, employment transportation assistance and rural general public transportation, will ask for approximately $226,500.
Additionally, the board also will discuss scheduling a public hearing on Aug. 7 on a rezoning request from Case Farms.
The request, which was forwarded to the commissioners from the county Planning Board with a positive recommendation, is asking that Case Farms' Pecan Road property be split between heavy industry and airport industry zones to accommodate both Seymour Johnson Air Force Base's accident potential zone and the company's need to expand its poultry processing plant operations.
Also on Tuesday, the Wayne County Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m. On its agenda is the consideration of a mobile home park plan in the Indian Springs Township by Byron Williams and a request by Ernest Wharton to combine his two mobile home parks on Forest Knoll's Road. Also to be discussed is a request by residents to rename a section of Nahunta Road and a special use request by A&J Auto to operate an auto repair shop near Norwayne Middle School.
