Summer school programs kick off July 9 at WCPS

Summer school will be in session for students around the county, officials announ-ced this week.
Wayne County Public Schools will host its annual "summer focused intervention" program at five school sites, from July 9 through Aug. 16.
Dr. Ruby Bell, director of middle grade education, said the program offers intensive instruction in math and reading for students in grades 3-8 who did not pass the state's end-of-grade tests.
Classes will run each week from Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Sites and the schools they serve include:
* Brogden Middle: Brogden Middle and Primary schools, Grantham, Spring Creek Elementary and High schools.
* Carver Elementary: Carver and Mount Olive Middle
* North Drive Elementary: North Drive, Carver Heights and School Street elementary schools, Dillard Middle and Goldsboro Intermediate
*Norwayne Middle: Norwayne; Northeast, Northwest, Fremont and Rosewood elementary schools; and Rosewood Middle.
*Tommy's Road Elementary: For Tommy's Road, Eastern Wayne Elementary and Middle schools, Greenwood Middle and Meadow Lane Elementary.
Postcard reminders will be mailed to parents of the dates and times, as well as the location and bus transportation information. More information can be obtained by contacting the children's regular school.
At the end of the summer session, students will be given a retake on the end-of-grade tests.
"This program is a valuable tool to help strengthen students who have struggled in math and reading," said Dr. Bell. "It is our goal to not only help students perform better on end-of-grade tests, but also help them become better equipped to handle more rigorous subject areas as they advance to higher grade levels."
