Wayne County Planning Board set to discuss comprehensive land use plan

The Wayne County Planning Board will discuss the county's comprehensive land use plan that has been in the works for more than a year at a 7 p.m. meeting Tuesday.
In early May, the plan, which is designed to be used as a guide by county officials as Wayne County grows during the next 20 years, was vetted by county residents during a community meeting.
The resulting changes made by the citizen steering committee that created the plan were presented to the planning board and the county Board of Commissioners at a joint meeting late last month.
The planning board, county Planning Director Connie Price said, is expected to review those changes and "hopefully come together on a recommendation to take to the county commissioners."
The board also will vote on a rezoning matter regarding Case Farms' property on Pecan Road, which was split between Goldsboro's and Wayne County's zoning jurisdictions.
The city, however, recently released its section to the county for zoning.
Price is proposing the property be split between heavy industry and airport industry. The airport industry zone, which is more restrictive than heavy industry, would be on the part of the property nearest Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
"It would allow Case Farms to expand their operations, while at the same time keeping it out of the accident potential zone, which is what the people at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base are most concerned about," he said.
If the rezoning proposal is approved, it will be sent to the county commissioners for consideration and possible public hearing.
And finally, the planning board will discuss -- and may make recommendations regarding -- two applications for special use permits made to the county Board of Adjustment.
One is by American Legion Post 11 for a recreational vehicle campground on its property on the east side of U.S. 117 South around Legion Lake. The other is by Ricky Young to expand his Young's Auto Salvage on U.S. 117 alternate, south of the county fairgrounds.
The two hearings will be the first held by the new board of adjustment, which is now made up of the county commissioners. The public hearings for the two projects will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 10.
