WCC counselor honored by state

Janice M. Fields, a counselor at Wayne Community College, has been named the first recipient of the N.C. Community College Student Development Personnel Association Counselors' Division Award for Professional Excellence.

Presented at the organization's recent conference in Raleigh, the award was presented for exemplifying counseling practices and support principles as a community college counselor.

Ms. Fields has worked at WCC for 27 years. As a counselor in the student development department, she is responsible for recruitment services and minority affairs.

She ha also served in many capacities on campus, in the community and in professional organizations. At WCC, she has advisor to the Minority Male Mentoring Group, or 3MG, and has worked to develop a female counterpart, My Sister's Keeper.

In her nomination for the award, Yvonne Goodman, associate vice president for student services, said that Ms. Fields "is very energized and really has a passion for what she does.

"She clearly supports education and encourages students to set goals to achieve the highest level of education possible."
