Wayne County native and Eagle Scout Mark Metzler has accepted the job of Torhunta District Boy Scout executive.

"I feel very fortunate this job came open around about the time I was graduating, and it seemed like a natural fit," said Metzler, who replaces Ashley Dowling. Ms. Dowling left in March to accept a position with the Imperial Boy Scout Council in San Diego, Calif.

Metzler said he thought about becoming a district executive when he was a Scout.

"I had worked on the summer camp staff for 10 years and, as graduation ap-proached, the dream became more realistic," he said.

When he graduated from North Carolina State University, he found the Torhunta job was waiting for him.

Two weeks ago, he started work at the Turscarora Boy Scout council office in Goldsboro. The council has three districts, Torhunta in Wayne County, Neusiok in Johnston and Coharie in Duplin and Sampson counties.

The Coharie district executive is Mark Harrell. The Neusiok district executive is Tyler Perkinson, also an Eagle Scout who worked nine years on the summer camp staff. Ten-year veteran Kirk Mayes, a former district executive for Torhunta and then Neusiok, is now the council's field director for all three districts. He also works out of the Goldsboro office.
