Former teachers and staff from the original Dillard High School will be honored as "living legacies" during the 52nd annual homecoming of Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni and Friends this weekend.

"Creating a Legacy -- Foundations for the Future" is the theme for the celebration, which is held annually during Memorial Day weekend and traditionally draws attendance from around the world.

The celebration kicks off Thursday evening with the scholarship and awards program, held at 7 p.m. in the Goldsboro High School auditorium. More than $80,000 in scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors and a new queen for the alumni association will be announced.

The weekend is also filled with a full schedule of events, organizers say, among them a banquet, two picnics, three dances, entertainment and a church service.

Graduating classes from years ending in 2's and 7's will also be holding reunions at various locations.

The original Dillard High School on West Elm Street from 1923-1957 will be remembered through former teachers and staff attending the homecoming. Special alumni groups from Forsyth, Georgia and Lumberton are also expected to attend.

On Saturday, a parade will be held downtown at 10 a.m. followed by picnics and the election of a new national president. The two candidates for the role are Raymond E. Smith Jr. and Quency Royall.

The public is also invited to join in the festivities. Membership tickets are $60 and may be purchased at Thursday's event and at the alumni center on Poplar Street each day leading up to and during the celebration.
