Lawmen collecting cell phones for elderly

RMS Communications Group Inc., a leading recycler and re-marketer of old cell phones based in Ocala, Fla., is teaming up with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office to raise funds to provide free emergency cell phones for local crime victims and elderly citizens.
Under the partnership, the Sheriff's Office will collect used cell phones that will be turned over to RMS for re-marketing through the company's 911 Cell Phone Bank program.
In return, RMS will provide the department with 911 phones as well as cash, which will be used to fund various emergency and community service needs.
Residents who have unused cell phones are encouraged to drop them off at the sheriff's office at the corner of Chestnut and William streets or by calling 731-1481.
Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said unused cell phones have already started to pour in.
"We have already collected about 100 phones," Winders said.
He encouraged others to participate.
RMS chief executive officer James Mosieur said law enforcement agencies around the country are signing up to participate in the 911 Cell Phone Bank program. Nearly 510 law enforcement and community services organizations around the country have signed up to participate in the 911 Cell Phone Bank program, he said.
