MOUNT OLIVE -- More than $134,000 has come in from the 21st annual Handy Mart/Mount Olive College Invitational Golf Tournament held recently at the Southern Wayne Country Club. With 136 sponsors and assorted volunteers, the total amount raised since the event began in 1987 totals more than $1.7 million dollars.
To date, 452 scholarships have been provided to students at the college through money raised by the tournament. Each year, half the money collected goes into endowment, while the other half goes directly toward scholarships. Interest from the endowment fund also supports the scholarship effort.
"The students of Mount Olive College are deeply appreciative to Buddy and Judson Pope, the sponsors and participants in The Handy Mart/Mount Olive College Invitational Tournament," said Chris Wood, vice president for institutional advancement at the college. "As a result of the vision and dedication of the Pope Family, the lives of hundreds of students have been transformed as a result of their college educations made possible through the Handy Mart Scholarship program."
