Scouts honor Murphy

WALLACE -- Wendell Murphy received the Centennial Distinguished Citizen Award Tuesday from the Tuscarora Boy Scout Council.
Murphy, a Rose Hill native, revolutionized the swine production industry with the introduction of contract farming. He served three terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives and served in the North Carolina Senate from 1989-1993.
The honor was bestowed before a sold-out crowd of more than 300 people at the Mad Boar restaurant in Wallace.
Speakers at the event included former Gov. Jim Hunt, N.C. State basketball coach Sidney R. Lowe and the university's chancellor, Dr. James L. Oblinger.
Proceeds from the event benefited the Tuscarora Council, which serves approximately 6,000 youth and their families in Duplin, Johnston, Sampson and Wayne Counties.
