The Local Letter Carriers and Rural Carriers, in partnership with the United Way of Wayne County, will conduct a food drive Saturday. The local drive is part of a national effort by more than 1,400 NALC branches in the United States to help fill local food banks.

The local letter carriers' goal is to collect 20,000 pounds of non-perishable food to benefit six local charities and food banks in Wayne County: City Rescue Mission of Goldsboro, Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro, Community Crisis Center, The Salvation Army, Society of St. Vincent de Paul and United Church Ministries.

Volunteers from participating agencies, area churches and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will join carriers in sorting, loading, and distributing the food.

Security-Atlas Storage and The Community Soup Kitchen are lending large trucks to help in the storage and distribution of the collected food to participating agencies.

The drive will cover residents with a Goldsboro ZIP code, including 27530 through 27534. Postal customers wishing to donate items may place them by their mailbox on the morning of the food drive. If they prefer, they can take their donation to the Berkeley Station Post Office or the Downtown Post Office on William Street now through Saturday and place it in the hamper found in the lobby.

Food drive organizers are asking patrons for non-glass containers only.
