The Wayne County Public Library has started its Community Garden Project for its second season.
Last summer, volunteers helped turn a plot of land near the library into a community garden. Library officials are urging others to join the effort and enjoy watching their efforts bloom.
Children's librarian Shorlette Stephens came up with the idea of establishing a community garden. She and assistant director Donna Phillips saw a need for a place where people from diverse backgrounds could meet and learn about each other.
From June through August, children and adults worked alongside each other in the garden growing vegetables, flowers -- and developing friendships.
This year, the garden will feature themed beds, reflective of the community's various ethnic cultures.
