Luncheon to raise money for girl campers

Six former Girl Scouts are conducting a fund drive to send 50 girls to camp this summer.
A luncheon is set for May 9 at the Goldsboro Country Club to kick off the Send a Girl to Camp fundraiser, which organizer Duffy Fleming said will have a summer camp theme.
"We'll carry over the camp theme at our lunch, with a camp-style lunch and a devotional to start it off and a few songs to end it," she said. "We want it to be different from your typical fundraisers. We want it to be fun while simultaneously teaching participants the true meaning of Girl Scouting."
All six of the former Girl Scouts are now volunteers with the organization, and they have enlisted the help of officials at the Girl Scout Council of Coastal Carolina office in Goldsboro.
Lunch is free, and those attending will learn what Girl Scouting is about and what it really means for a girl to become a member.
Mrs. Fleming said she and the other organizers want to share the value of their own experiences as Scouts with a new generation of young women.
"It's helping to build stronger girls with solid and long-lasting values," she said.
To go to camp, a girl has to sign up to be a Girl Scout if she is not one already, council officials said.
The women have already pulled together $3,000. Since it costs $225 a week to send one girl to camp, that's enough to send 12 girls -- with little leftover.
That means there is still quite a bit more than raise to reach that 50-camper goal.
The women are seeking donations of any amount, but $150 or more makes the donor a "sponsor." Their first sponsor is Vivian Wharton, who the council officials say is a strong supporter of the organization.
