County 4-H'ers livestock show

Events got under way early at the county fairgrounds Wednesday morning for the nearly 60 children involved in the 59th Annual Wayne County Junior Livestock Show and Sale.
After weighing in their animals, which included 44 pigs, 42 goats and four calves, Wayne County Livestock Development Association President Curtis Shivar said the children rounded out the evening with the junior meat goat show and the junior feeder calf show.
Each child who participated in the event displayed his or her showmanship ability with his or her animal after it was placed in a meat class based on the animal's weight, Shivar said.
Showmanship allows the children to compete for who has fitted, groomed and trained his or her animal the best, North Carolina Cooperative Extension Services livestock agent Eileen Coite said. Each animal, whether a goat, pig or calf, must meet a list of requirements for it or its owner to be considered for the top prizes.
Last night, the senior showmanship award in the calf category went to Elizabeth Rowe. Miss Rowe also won the senior showmanship award in the goat category. Senior showmanship awards are given to presenters between the ages of 14 and 19 years old.
The junior showmanship award, which is given to presenters between the ages of 9 and 13 years old, was given to Jesse Grady. He and his calf were also named grand champions following last night's calf show. Avery Faulkner was named the reserve calf champion.
In the goat show category, the junior showmanship award was given to Alec Linton, and the novice showmanship award, which is given to presenters between the ages of 5 and 8 years old, was given to Rebecca Grady.
The grand champion goat was shown by Adam McCullen, with the reserve award going to Rachel McCullen.
The Wayne County Junior Livestock Show and Sale continues today at the Wayne County Fairgrounds near the intersection of U.S. 117 and U.S. 13 south of Goldsboro.
Events include the hog show, which begins at 9 a.m. The livestock judging contest is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Following dinner at 6 p.m., the children will be given their awards at 7 p.m. and the livestock sale will begin at 7:30.
