The Neuse River Foundation is seeking volunteers in canoes and kayaks as well as folks along the shoreline to help clear the river banks of litter.

The cleanup will be Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. come rain or shine starting at Kinston.

The event began five years ago in Raleigh and is now including the Neuse River at Kinston.

The volunteers will meet between 8 and 9 a.m. at the U.S. 70 bridge boat ramp just outside of Kinston where U.S. 70 crosses the Neuse. Coming from Goldsboro, the boat ramp is on the right side of the road, just after crossing the river. The Riverkeepers say they plan to have signs made to put out along the road.

Riverkeeper Larry Baldwin says they have a limited number of free canoe loaners, which will be available on a first-come basis. Paddlers with their own canoes or kayaks are also welcome, he said.

The Riverkeepers will provide things like gloves, trash bags and shuttles for paddlers.

Volunteers should dress for wet muddy conditions and are encouraged to bring sunscreen, bug repellent and a snack.
