City Hall work expected to start sometime in May

Renovation and restoration of Goldsboro's original City Hall is expected to begin next month, officials said.
Assistant finance director Kaye Scott said financing for the $4 million project was approved Wednesday by the Local Government Commission.
BB&T will manage the 15-year loan after coming in as the low bidder, she added.
"We haven't closed on the loan yet but we have been approved," Mrs. Scott said, adding next year's payment will run $418,000.
Local firm Daniels and Daniels is expected to begin work on the project around May 1 and officials hope staff can move into the facility sometime next fall.
Plans for the building include restoration of its historic integrity and a few minor additions -- ramps, new windows and a bridge connecting the old and new City Hall buildings.
Phase II also involves cleaning and restoration of the statues Liberty and Justice, officials said.
Once renovations are complete, four city departments will move in to the 100-year-old building -- community development, community affairs, human resources and the city nurse.
The building will house council chambers and once it's ready for use, City Council meetings will take place on the second floor. Until then, council meetings will continue to be held in the second-floor conference room at the new City Hall.
The third and final phase of the project will begin at the conclusion of Phase Two and involves demolition of the annex building, an event that has already occurred. A parking lot will be constructed on the cleared land.
