Salvage yard is back on agenda for Wayne Commissioners

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will consider a change to the zoning map Tuesday morning that would allow for the expansion of a salvage yard on U.S. 117 South after several months of public hearings and tabling the issue.
Ricky Young, the owner of Young's Auto Center off U.S. 117 South in Dudley, originally requested in 2005 that some of his property be rezoned so he could expand his business, but the commissioners voted against the issue.
By law, Young had to wait one year before he could make the request again. The county planning board unanimously approved Young's request to expand his salvage yard by two acres last November.
But not everyone approves of Young's request. When Young made his first rezoning request in 2005, neighbors Jeannette and Johnny Perry argued that Young did not meet all of the county's requirements for a salvage yard.
The Perrys continued their argument against the rezoning request during a Feb. 20 commissioners' meeting. Jeannette Perry told board members that Young already uses the requested land as a salvage yard, which is environmentally unsound and blocks access to their home.
Young said all of his land is in compliance with county laws and he runs one of the cleanest operations in North Carolina.
The commissioners are expected to make their decision during Tuesday's meeting, which starts at 9 a.m. following a briefing session at 8. Meetings are held in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse on William Street.
The board is also expected to schedule the 2007 Board of Equalization and Review to meet May 1-15. The Board of Equalization and Review hears local taxpayers' appeals concerning their property values and will meet beginning at 8 a.m. each of those days in the commissioners' meeting room.
