Tommy's Road class learns about Korea

A group of Tommy's Road Elementary kindergarten students is using a Learn and Serve grant to show their support of Seymour Johnson airmen currently deployed to Korea.
Lori Smith, a Tommy's Road Elementary kindergarten teacher wrote for the grant and was awarded $2,000 for her idea on integrating a community service project with classroom learning.
The theme of the project is "Life in Korea." Besides showing support for local airmen, students also have the opportunity to learn more about Korea.
Students are sending letters and e-mails, making cards and cheerful artwork. The class is in the process of recording songs on a CD for the deployed airmen. The class used the grant money to purchase 20 compact disc players for airmen to listen to their music while in Korea. The class also plans to purchase items such as reading material, personal hygiene accessories, crossword puzzle books, etc. to send in care packages.
The grant also allowed the class to purchase disposable cameras to send to each airmen so they can take photos of Korea. Through the funding, film development is also paid for when the cameras are mailed back.
Mrs. Smith said she hopes the photos will allow students the opportunity to get a visual idea of life in Korea.
"This has been a wonderful project," she said. "My students have been so eager to get involved. They felt an immediate connection because one of my student's dads is one of the soldiers we are supporting."
