Wayne students raise money for Red Cross

Wayne County Public Schools students are supporting the Fifth Annual American Red Cross Heroes Campaign, raising money through "Pennies for a Purpose."
Nineteen area schools are participating this year, with students decorating five-gallon water bottles for collecting change. Funds raised are used to support lifesaving programs and services offered in Wayne County.
When the campaign concludes at the end of the month, all money raised will be turned over to the Red Cross. The bottles will be judged on artistic merit and the winning schools will get $100 to be used for supplies.
This year, two schools, Eastern Wayne Middle and Rosewood High, are working to become Red Cross "Heroes," a title given to those who raise $1,000. Eastern Wayne is hosting an "American Idol" talent show Thursday. The JROTC at Rosewood held a Stomp Fest talent show March 16.
Samia Garner, blood services director for the Wayne County Red Cross chapter, said that last year the project raised almost $5,000 to help local people.
Schools participating are Brogden Primary, Carver Heights Elementary, Charles B. Aycock High, Dillard Middle, Eastern Wayne Elementary, Eastern Wayne High, Eastern Wayne Middle, Edgewood Developmental School, Fremont Stars, Goldsboro High, Goldsboro Intermediate, Grantham, Greenwood Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary, North Drive Elementary, Northwest Elementary, Norwayne Middle, Rosewood High, and Spring Creek High.
