Commissioners to consider salvage yard expansion, Fremont library closing

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will consider a change to the zoning map that would allow for the expansion of a salvage yard on U.S. 117 South.
The commissioners will meet Tuesday morning, starting at 9 a.m., following a briefing sesssion at 8. Meetings are held in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse on William Street.
During the board's last meeting on Feb. 20, John and Jeanette Perry spoke against Ricky Young's request to expand his salvage yard by two acres because it is environmentally unsound and the property is already a nuisance to their nearby home.
The Perry's and Young traded comments during the meeting, with Jeanette Perry saying Young already uses the requested land as a salvage yard and Young saying that all of his land is in compliance with county laws and that he runs one of the cleanest operations in all of North Carolina.
The commissioners denied Young's previous request last year to rezone some of property to expand his business. County law says that Young had to wait a year before making another request.
The board is also scheduled Tuesday morning to hear from Fremont town officials who are concerned about the proposed closing of the town's library.
The commissioners are also expected to request the old Wayne Community College property from the state. The board has not made a decision as to how they will use the land, but the county would be responsible for tearing down the old administration building if they owned the property.
