Four Eastern Wayne Middle School students were among representatives from 38 schools across the U.S. and western Africa who recently attended the UNA-USA Middle School Model United Nations Conference in New York City.

Participating in the simulated debate at the UN building were eighth-graders Seth Taylor, Michael Hood, James Crowe and Jason Horne. The members of the debate team have been coached by social studies teacher Mary Susan Heath.

In Model UN, participants role play as ambassadors from member countries, researching their nation's position on global issues. Students wrote position papers, addressed committees through speeches, and learned about negotiating and being part of a caucus.

Approximately 650 students attended and were assigned to play the part of all member countries of the United Nations.

Eastern Wayne students represented the African nation of Kenya.

The local club's topic was the eradication of poverty with the Economic Commission of Africa and the plight of women and children refugees on the High Commission of Refugees Executive Committee.
