Wayne County Public Schools will hold kindergarten pre-registration at 15 elementary schools on Friday, March 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A child must be five years old on or before Oct. 16 to register for kindergarten for the coming year. Parents and legal guardians must present an official birth certificate, immunization records, and a child's social security number to school officials. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child's birth. A parent must also show "proof of residence," i.e., electric bill, telephone bill, etc.

North Carolina Law requires that before kindergarten registration, a child must receive a health assessment and his shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, which is available from the county school system, the county health department, and most pediatricians' offices. If needed, parents and legal guardians will be given a health assessment from during pre-registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes August 25.

Anyone unable to register their child on the designated day is asked to contact the school as soon as possible.

If unsure of the school the child will attend, call school administrative offices at 731-5900 or stop by the administrative offices at 2001 East Royall Avenue.

All students registering for kindergarten must register at the school in the district in which they live.

If a parent wishes to request a transfer to a different school, transfer requests will be accepted during the month of June for schools that have space available. A list of schools with space available will be made public.

Current kindergarten students will not attend school on March 30, which will count as a vacation day for them.
