DNA specialists to speak to two Wayne classes

Two Wayne County Public Schools teachers have been selected to have University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill "DNA Day Ambassadors" visit their classrooms next month.
Charles B. Aycock High School biology teachers Julie West and Christy Collins are among 65 teachers statewide selected to have a UNC scientist talk to their students about DNA on April 25.
The "DNA Day Ambassadors" are participating in National DNA Day, an opportunity to learn more about genetics and genomics. Graduate or postdoctoral fellows conducting research in the biomedical sciences will share with students about their work as well as conducting an activity in the classroom.
The occasion will be a great opportunity for Aycock science students and teachers, said Ralph Smith, lead science teacher for the county school system.
"I am glad that Ms. Collins and Ms. West took the time to apply to participate in this activity. The UNC scientists will help educate students on the exciting areas of DNA research and how recent advancements will impact them in the coming years," he said.
