Goldsboro Fire Chief Alvin Ward is asking residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors now that they have changed their clocks.
Having a working smoke detector in the home could save your family from becoming a victim, Ward said.
He offers these five fire safety tips.
*Install smoke alarms on every level of your home including basements. Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or within 6 to 8 inches from the ceiling and installed per the manufacture's instructions.
*Smoke alarm batteries should be changed a minimum of twice a year when the daylight-saving time changes.
*Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do in the event the smoke alarms activates.
*If the smoke alarm makes a chirping sound, replace the batteries or the entire device.
*If cooking sets off the smoke alarm, do not disable the smoke alarm. Simply open the windows and turn on ventilation fans when available. The smoke alarm is only doing what it is designed for -- detecting smoke.
