Two Smithfield men died after a train struck them Saturday night, according to a report by the Smithfield Police Department.
Carlos Dubose, 35, and Larry Allen, 34, were standing side by side on the cross ties along the east side of the railroad tracks in Smithfield as a CSX train was approaching, investigators said.
Train engineers gave several warnings to the men by blowing the train's horn, but the men did not move, according to the engineers' statements to police. The crew also attempted to stop the train, but couldn't before Dubose and Allen were struck at about 11:35 p.m. Saturday near the mile post 164 in Smithfield.
Smithfield police officers responded to the scene and found Dubose and Allen dead within feet of one another near the tracks.
Officers said the investigation is continuing.
