School assault
In a possible gang-related attack, a James Kenan High School student was assaulted Wednesday night after a soccer game, Duplin County School Superintendent Dr. Wiley Doby said this morning.
Contrary to rumors, he added, the student was not stabbed, but was attacked by a multiple assailants.
"My understanding is that several people attacked the student," Doby said. "He did have some cuts or abraisions around the head and was taken to Duplin General Hospital, but he was released."
The student's identity was not released.
Doby did say, though, that the attackers were not James Kenan students and that he did not believe they were students at another county school.
The incident is under investigation by the Duplin County Sheriff's Office, which could not be reached for comment.
