A driver injured in a Friday night accident near Mount Olive died late Saturday at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

Kyle Martin Berger, 20, of LaGrange, was driving on Bert Martin Lane about 10 p.m. Friday when he lost control of his Jeep Cherokee.

His girlfriend, Katie Elizabeth Jones, 19, of Dudley was killed in the accident.

Highway Patrol investigators said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it entered a curve, left the roadway and flipped over.

Neither driver nor passenger was wearing a seat belt, troopers said. Alcohol was not a factor in the wreck, they said.

Both Berger and Ms. Jones were students at Wayne Community College.

Dr. Ed Wilson, president of Wayne Community College, commented this morning on the loss.

"On behalf of the college, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to the families of these students," he said. "The campus shares the sorrow of losing two young members of the Wayne Community College family.

"Their fellow students and the faculty and staff will remember Kyle and Katie and are reaching out to Katie's mother, who is also a student (at WCC) to offer whatever comfort we may."

Tara Humphries, public information officer at Wayne Community, said it was too early to announce any plans for a memorial at the college.

Funeral services for Miss Jones will be today at 7 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of Wayne and Laura Anderson and Greg and Alice Jones.

Funeral services for Berger will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home in LaGrange. He was the son of Fred and Becky Martin Berger.

Four people have died on Wayne County roads so far this year.
