'Pet of the Week' program designed to increase adoptions

She has big, brown eyes and loves to cuddle.
He loves to stretch out and be pampered.
But neither have a place they call home.
Wayne County Animal Control hope to change that this week as it implement its "Pets of the Week" program.
"Sadie," a two and a half year old female hound dog mix, and "Garfield," a 1-year-old male orange domestic shorthair cat, are the first two animals to be featured in the program.
Both animals have friendly, calm dispositions. And both love to be petted.
Animal Shelter Director Justin Scally said Sadie and Garfield are just the tip of the iceberg as to what's available at the shelter at 900 Brick St.
"We have so many animals in Wayne County that need a family. We have all shapes, sizes, genders and breeds and the selection changes every day," Scally said.
Sadie and Garfield, along with any other animals at the shelter, can be adopted by paying a non-refundable fee. The fee is $35 for male pets and $50 for females.
Also, animal control officers and state law condone pet responsibility as soon as a pet is adopted from the shelter. Every adopted animal is required to receive a rabies vaccination and be spayed or neutered within a particular time frame based on the pet's age.
Owners spay or neuter their adopted animal within that time frame is awarded a refund by the county. The refund is $25 for males and $40 for females.
