Local Habitat for Humanity will receive $25,000 grant

The Goldsboro-Wayne Habitat for Humanity will receive a $25,000 grant for engaging support from churches to build homes for low-income families..
Habitat has already built several houses with money and volunteer help from area churches, development and communications director Sherry Archibald said. The church groups have built four houses in Goldsboro and another in Mount Olive, she said.
First Baptist Church of Goldsboro has built two houses, and Disciple Build, a group of 11 area churches, has helped construct one.
Youth United, a group formed from the youth groups in three churches -- St. Mary, Garris United Methodist and First Pentacostal Holiness -- has also built a house.
The congregation at Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Goldsboro has agreed to sponsor a house and has begun a campaign with plans to build in 2008.
And the Mount Olive group, Partners for Habitat of Mount Olive, has built one house and has another under construction. This group is made up of members from several churches and Christian organizations in Mount Olive that came together to help build Habitat houses.
The Open Door Challenge Grant comes from Habitat for Humanity International's Church Relations department. The local Habitat will have to match the grant with local contributions and use all the grant money in 2007 building new houses.
So far, the Goldsboro-Wayne Habitat for Humanity has built 20 homes. Ms. Archibald said it normally costs about $50,000 to build one house, so the grant and local match will add one more house.
