News-Argus wins state awards for '06 editions

RALEIGH -- The Goldsboro News-Argus is the second best newspaper of its size in the state, according to judges in a state journalism contest.
The News-Argus news staff won second place in the General Excellence category in the 15,000 to 34,999 circulation division Thursday night at the annual North Carolina Press Association awards banquet.
Judging for the category was based on mechanical excellence, general and departmental news coverage, literacy excellence, promotion of community interests, graphics and appearance, editorial vigor, use of photographs and advertising enterprise.
The newspaper also received a first-place award for its 2006 Progress edition, "Then & Now."
The paper was represented in Raleigh by editor Renee Carey and sports editor Steve Roush, who brought four awards back to Goldsboro late Thursday night.
In addition to the general excellence and special section awards, Roush won second place in the sports features category with "Through the Eyes of a Clown," a story on Wayne County native Hubert "Daddy" Wooten, a former barnstormer with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro League.
Also honored was the News-Argus' football preseason edition, "2006 Kickoff," which received third place in its division.
"The News-Argus staff is proud to bring home these honors and to share them with our community," Mrs. Carey said. "Our community's support of our efforts has helped make these awards possible. We thank all those who have been a part of helping us tell Wayne County's stories this past year."
This year's progress edition, "Portraits," will be published Wednesday, Feb. 28.
