Ex-sheriff's deputy apologize for DWI

PINETOPS -- Former Wayne County sheriff's Deputy William Roscoe Young apologized to his former boss in the wake of a DWI charge levied against him in Edgecombe County late Monday.
Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said Young issued a verbal apology to him as he came in to turn in his badge, service weapon and other equipment. Winders said Young, a 44-year-old Wilson resident, said he was sorry for "embarrassing" the department.
Young was involved in a one-vehicle accident on N.C. 42 near St. Louis Road at about 10:40 p.m., Lt. Everett Clendenin, a highway patrol spokesman said. Young, who was off duty and not in uniform, lost control of his 1998 Ford Mustang, crossed the center line, struck a tree and landed in a ditch, officials said.
Troopers detected a hint of alcohol on Young. A breathalyzer test revealed Young's blood alcohol level was .13 and he was immediately taken into custody. The legal limit is .08.
Winders terminated Young after his DWI arrest.
Young worked in the warrant division at the Wayne County Sheriff's Depart-ment. He had been with the department for about three years. Prior to that, he worked for the Wilson County Sheriff's Department for about 11 years.
Many who knew him said Young was a good deputy who always had a smile on his face. They called the incident "unfortunate."
Young is scheduled to appear in court to answer the DWI charge on April 5 in Edgecombe County.
Young is the third law enforcement officer with Wayne County ties to be arrested for DWI in four months.
