Officers chase fleeing driver

A Goldsboro man led police on a high-speed chase across northern Wayne County early today, until he abandoned his truck near Stantonsburg in Greene County and was captured in a briar patch while trying to get away.
Jamie Parrish, 32, of Quaker Drive, was charged with careless and reckless driving, resisting an officer and fleeing to elude arrest, along with speeding, failure to stop for a red light, driving while license revoked, having no auto insurance, displaying a fictitious license tag and driving without using a seat belt.
His bond was set at $10,000, pending a Feb. 21 day in court.
Goldsboro police Maj. Mike Hopper said the incident began about 1:20 a.m. when an officer on patrol, J.C. Hales, stopped Parrish's white Nissan pickup at the intersection of New Hope Road and Pinemont Circle after noticing what he thought was a phony license tag.
Hopper said Hales asked Parrish to get out of his truck and that the two men were talking when Parrish suddenly turned, ran back to his truck and took off.
Hales got help from other police officers, Wayne County Sheriff's Office deputies, Wilson County Sheriff's deputies and, eventually, the Stantonsburg police.
Parrish led the convoy of lawmen to the 100 block of East Commercial Drive in Stantonsburg, Hopper said, before leaping from the truck and into a ditch, where officers found him entangled in briars.
"They had to fish him out," he said.
