AARP's Tax-Aide program will be offering free tax counseling and simple income-tax preparation for seniors and low-income wage earners starting Feb. 5 through April 16.

The free service will be offered on Mondays and Thursdays at the Wayne County Public Library on Ash Street from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Help with both state and federal tax forms will be available.

Taxpayers should bring all necessary documents with them for the 2006 tax year, along with copies of their 2005 tax forms.

Both spouses must be present if filing a joint return.

Lengthy, more complex forms cannot be prepared until March.

The Internal Revenue Service requires that all taxpayers bring a valid photo, such as a driver's license, for identification. Social Security cards or cards for spouses and dependents also are required.

Volunteers will be filing returns electronically for those wish to do so. People who want their refund deposited directly into their bank account should bring their checkbook or voided check.
