Wayne County residents are already gearing up for this year's Relay for Life.

The Wayne County Unit of the American Cancer Society has scheduled the event for May 18-19 at Wayne Community College.

Last year's Relay raised $636,000, co-chairman Terry Butler said. She said this year's goal is $675,000. A total of 105 teams took part in the 2006 Relay.

Mrs. Butler said she feels confident that Wayne County will reach this year's goal. "That's why we set goals, to try to reach them," she said. "And if you don't reach them, then at least we had that fight to try to do it."

She said the 2006 Relay went well. "You think every year that you can't surpass the year before. Last year, it reminded me of a fair.

"I can't see how it can get any bigger, but then I can because Wayne County shines during this particular time. I guess it's just where cancer affects so many people and this is a way to show support and help."

Mrs. Butler said there are sure to be some surprises at this year's Relay, but those won't be announced until the event gets closer.

There will be a new team orientation Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Hospital's cafeteria.

To help those who want to head up a team, the Cancer Society will sponsor a Team Captain University Feb. 15 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Hospital cafeteria.

Those attending will learn more about the Cancer Society and Relay for Life, how to build and manage a team and new and innovative fundraising ideas. Anyone taking someone to the meeting who is interested in forming a new team, will qualify for the new +1 Club.

The official Relay kickoff is set for Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
