Two students from Wayne County Public Schools are semifinalists for the Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Nida Waheed, a senior at Charles B. Aycock High School, and Spring Creek High School senior Paul Richter, join Byron Bryan, a senior at Wayne Country Day School, who was named earlier as a semi-finalist.
The three youths will travel to Kinston Tuesday to be interviewed by a regional committee. Over a three-week period, the regional committees will narrow the field of 250 semi-finalists to 60-70 finalists, who will compete at UNC-Chapel Hill March 3-6.
Recipients will attend UNC on a full four-year scholarship. They will also participate in summer enrichment programs designed to develop leadership skills and will have the opportunity to travel abroad.
Ms. Waheed is the daughter of Dr. Waheed Akhtar and Shabana Waheed. She is president of student government and the Model United Nations Club. She also volunteers at a free medical clinic and Teen Court. She plans to major in chemistry.
Richter is the son of Michael and Jane Richter of Goldsboro. He is a member of the National Honor Society, president of the Science National Honor Society, and Math Club. He is co-captain of the soccer and wrestling teams and also participates in track.
