Officials: There's still flu vaccine in county

Flu shots are available at the Wayne County Health Department and Health Director James Roosen said it is not too late for people who have not had the annual vaccination to take advantage of the offer.
North Carolina was the first state to report regional flu activity this season, Roosen pointed out, adding that other southeastern states have reported higher numbers of flu cases. Most of the cases in North Carolina involve children, he said.
"The best defense against getting the flu is getting vaccinated now," Roosen said this week. "There is plenty of influenza vaccine available this season, so those still needing a vaccine should receive it now."
Typically, the flu season does not peak until February, but it can extend deep into spring, Roosen said.
Since flu viruses changes each year, Roosen said it is important for residents to have their vaccinations updated annually.
Flu shots are available at the Health Department Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. It is a walk-in clinic, with no appointment necessary. Cost is $20.
Those who receive Medicare/Medicaid are asked to present their card at the time of registration. The Health Department will file a claim with Medicare/Medicaid to cover the expense.
