Search continues for new director at local museum

Wayne County Museum officials say they are nearing the end of their search for a new director.
Former museum director Janet Clayton resigned in November to take a job with the Wayne County school system. She was the library's director for about a year.
Association members have been volunteering to run the library during its winter hours of noon until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Association President Preston Garris said the association's selection committee is preparing to interview three finalists for the job. He said the committee, which also has Velda Faye Howell and Anna Lawson as members, expects to have a new director named by late this month, Garris said.
"That's the wish date, the hope date," said Garris. He said Jan. 23 is a deadline he has set for himself, but "it's not etched in stone."
The job is not full-time job. It requires a special person to take over the 25-hour-a-week position, he said. The hours are a little too long for some retired people, and the noon-until-4 schedule is difficult for working parents who want to be home when their children return from school.
"I feel confident. We have all the applications we need. All three (finalists) look good."
The job starts out paying $9 an hour, depending on qualifications, Garris said.
Association board members Charles Ellis, Chris and Anna Lawson and Bobby and Velda Faye Howell have been taking turns staffing the museum during its open hours.
Once a director is hired, the museum's hours will likely expand, Garris added, closing at 5 p.m. instead of 4.
