Girl Scouts will begin taking orders for cookies Friday.

And a new cookie is in the batch this year, said Deborah Brady, the product sales coordinator for the Girl Scout Council of Coastal Carolina.

The new cookie is called Lemonade, a shortbread cookie with a lemon glaze.

All of the cookies contain no trans fats in order to please health-conscious consumers, she noted.

She said the national Girl Scout organization convinced the baking companies it contracts with to bake them free of preservatives.

Girls will be taking orders until the cookies arrive on Feb. 10 and will be delivering the cookies in February and March. Booth sales also will be held.

The Girl Scout cookie sale provides resources to help the council cover expenses, Mrs. Brady says. Many troops take field trips using the cookie money. Selling also serves as a learning activity, Girl Scout leaders said. Scouts learn the importance of teamwork, money management, following through on a commitment, and they gain confidence in dealing with others.
