City will continue hunt for director

Goldsboro officials are still on the hunt for a qualified replacement for outgoing General Services director Joe Sawyer.

City Manager Joe Huffman said interviews are being conducted and some worthy candidates have already been identified, but there is still no way to tell when a hire will be made.

"I would hope to have a name for you sometime within the next two weeks," he said. "But there's no guarantee."

And once the hire is made, it is likely that the incoming director will need additional time to complete the move to the city Huffman added.

"Whomever we hire, I would imagine they are going to have to give some kind of notice," he said.

Sawyer's retirement party was held last week. Still, Huffman said the longtime department head would stay on with the city as interim director until his replacement arrives.

The General Services' top spot is the second leadership position to open up in the past few months.

Fire Chief Bobby Greenfield also retired after decades of service to the city and its residents but his replacement has already been hired and is expected to take the reins in just more than two weeks.

On both positions, Huffman said he doesn't mind the wait if it means Goldsboro finds the best people possible.
