Man recovering from gunshot wound

A Stantonsburg man remains at a Greenville hospital recovering from a shotgun wound he received during a fight over the weekend.
Timothy Glenn Whitley, 47, of N.C. 58 North, was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital after he was shot in the left side and hip area during a brawl that broke out about 12:06 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Red Hill Road in Statonsburg.
Whitley's medical condition was not released by hospital officials.
No charges have been filed in the case, said Wayne County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour, who said the investigation is continuing.
According to reports from at least three Wayne County men, Whitley allegedly was the aggressor in the fight.
Whitley allegedly assaulted Edward Theodore Smith, 64, at the Red Hill Road home. Another man, David Allen Shadding, 42, of Pelt Road, Stantonsburg, allegedly tried to break up the fight.
At that point, Whitley allegedly went outside and came back with a shovel. Shadding told Wayne County sheriff's deputies that Whitley struck him in the head with the shovel, knocking him on the couch. Then, Whitley allegedly jumped on top of Shadding and began to choke him.
Shadding's brother, Jimmy Joe Shadding, 62, of Red Hill Road, allegedly intervened and shot Whitley in the left side with a shotgun. Then, Whitley fled from the home and went to another man's home and called for help.
Smith, and the two Shadding brother also called for help, but declined medical treatment. It remains unclear what prompted the initial fight.
Alcohol did play a factor in the case, officials said.
