Prognosticators with the National Weather Service backed away from predictions Wednesday that the Neuse River would rise to flood level today and forecast the river would crest early Friday at nearly a foot below flood stage.
Heavy rain over the weekend caused the river to swell and threaten to overrun its banks west of Goldsboro. The National Weather Services's hydrological Web site indicated Wednesday that it would rise as high as the minimal flood level of 18 feet.
But that forecast was revised early today to show the river cresting at 17.3 feet and staying at that level until it begins to fall early Sunday.
Weather forecasters aren't calling for more rain until at least Sunday.
