The Health Department has about 400 flu shots available, officials announced today.

Health Director James Roosen said the department is seeing an increase in the number of cases of influenza-like illness and wants to make sure the public is protected in time for the flu season.

"If people get the shot now they'll be protected through the season, which is January and February," he said. "I think it's pretty important that we try to make the vaccine available to as many people as possible."

To date, the Health Department has dispensed an estimated 1,500 doses of the vaccine this season, Roosen said. There is a nominal fee, he noted, but in most cases Medicare and insurance companies cover the cost.

The main goal is to get the vaccine to as many citizens in Wayne County as need it, he said. Walk-ins are welcome.
