Spring Creek students send cookies to troops

Students at Spring Creek Elementary School started their holiday baking early this year so that overseas troops will receive the goodies in time for Christmas.
A self-contained class of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders came up with the idea after they met teacher Jennifer Cooper's husband, Tech Sgt. Gabriel Cooper, who has been deployed in the past.
"Students thought of him as the holidays approached and decided to support him and the troops by sending cookies," Mrs. Cooper explained.
Their enthusiasm spread and the entire school of 900 students got involved, Mrs. Cooper said. They bought or baked goodies to be bagged, boxed and bundled up to benefit those serving in the military.
Some classes began packaging the cookies earlier this week. On Wednesday, an assembly line was formed for students to complete the process.
Students went out to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on Thursday to deliver more than 170 bags to airmen. Their next stop was to the post office to ship another 500 bags to the "Sandbox," Mrs. Cooper said, referring to the location of many who are deployed in the desert.
