Mount Olive College FFA chapter gives coats to children

MOUNT OLIVE -- Fifty students at Carver Elementary School will be a little warmer this winter, thanks to efforts of the Mount Olive College FFA chapter.
New coats were distributed at the school recently. Several members of the MOC FFA raised more than $1,000 during a month-long fundraising drive by soliciting gifts from area individuals and businesses.
Through the Coats-for-Kids program, the college students were able to purchases coats, gloves and toboggans for children at the school.
Keith Faison, assistant principal at Carver, said he was grateful for the effort.
"It was a wonderful act of kindness and the children are extremely excited about their early Christmas present," he said.
Don Thompson, interim director of the agribusiness center at Mount Olive College, said he was pleased to continue the project and provide coats for those who needed them.
"The students say that the project does more for than the coats that they give away," he said.
Coats for Kids Foundation was established in January 2004 as a public, charitable foundation by Paul and Cheryl Darby of Alexandria, Virginia. Last year they delivered 834 new winter coats to needy boys and girls.
The MOC Collegiate Chapter of FFA will continue to accept donations through December for the Coats for Kids campaign. For more information, call Thompson at 658-2502.
