Holiday shoppers soon won't have to worry about driving to each Goldsboro hot spot to buy toys and other Christmas presents.

The Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority, or GATEWAY, board agreed Tuesday afternoon to include an additional vehicle and route specifically for holiday shoppers beginning two weeks before Christmas.

Although GATEWAY already has a Berkeley Boulevard route that runs every hour, another half-hour route will transport shoppers to and from Wal-Mart on Spence Avenue, the Berkeley Mall and Berkeley Commons where Bed, Bath and Beyond and other stores are located, GATEWAY Director Stephen Wright said.

That route should begin the week of Dec. 11 and run until Christmas Eve to accommodate any last-minute shoppers. During the same week the new route begins, GATEWAY will also extend its route times.

All regularly scheduled routes across Wayne County will run from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., which extends routes by three hours, Wright said. The holiday shopping route will run from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Although the route will cause the program to incur additional costs such as paying for the driver, fuel and maintenance of the vehicle, Wright said the holiday route will keep the same fare as regular routes -- $1 per ride.

For more information on all routes or to purchase bus passes, call GATEWAY at 736-1374.
