Students make cards for airmen

Carver Heights Elementary School students clustered in a circle around their art teacher, Allison James, staring at the blank pieces of green construction paper before them.
As she gave instructions for creating a snowman-covered Christmas card, the first-graders scrambled for colored pencils to design their own.
The cards are part of an effort to brighten the holidays for single airmen living in the dormitories on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. This is the second year the school system has participated in the project, sponsored by the Officer and Civilian Spouse's Club as part of its annual Airmen's Cookie Drive.
More than 600 holiday cards will be made by students from Fremont STARS, Carver Heights, Tommy's Road, Meadow Lane and Eastern Wayne elementary schools as well as Edgewood Community Developmental School.
In December, the OCSC will enlist community support to provide a personal care package of home-baked goodies along with the personalized Christmas card to each airman. Extra cards will be sent to airmen serving overseas.
Vie Walchi, chairman of the drive, said the OCSC organizes the annual project to let those serving in the military that the community cares about them and appreciates their service and sacrifice.
"The holidays are fast-approaching and for many of our young airmen, this is their first Christmas away from home," he said.
